NYFW Day Two, Part Five | SKINGRAFT

Hailing from Los Angeles, designer Jonny Cota of SKINGRAFT put life back into me on seemingly the longest day of my life. Praise ye, Cota! You know the show is going to be good when it’s put on by reputable PR firm, People’s Revolution, headed by one of my boss lady idols, Kelly mother f*cking Cutrone. Yes, I saw her in real life along with her assistant, Emily Bungert, who you may have seen on the TV series Kell on Earth. Oh, and that’s not all I saw. Fashionista Whoopi Goldberg (Ha! Sarcasm…) sat front row with posse in tow. Also on the scene was Nigel Barker, formerly from America’s Next Top Model, whom I actually saw a lot of face time from- at the Lincoln Center tents walking around and front row at Pamella Roland. SKINGRAFT was definitely one of the most celebrity packed events I attended and one of my favorite shows.

SKINGRAFT’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection, Santa Sangre, translated holy blood, is inspired by Santeria and Mexican prayer alters which focuses on the elements of blood, smoke, earth and bone and explores these ideas through a collection of signature SKINGRAFT prints and silhouettes. Sheer silks, nylons and mesh fabrications unveil a lighter mystical side of SKINGRAFT in spring. The influence of blood is apparent in the collection due to a collaboration with NYC-based blood artist Jordan Eagles. (Via the show’s information sheet)

A constant seen on the SS 15 runways were sheer and mesh, but SKINGRAFT put an sporty urban spin on the fabrics that transitions perfectly to ready to wear, helping you to ward off any street demons you may encounter. Smokey prints, white leather and mesh combinations, silver plated pants and a haunting black hooded cape were my favorites from the show. But really there wasn’t a bad look that graced the runway. Most looks were adorned with metal ear cuffs, which I’m happy will be a look sticking around for a while.

With the deep contemplative inspirations of Santeria, a syncretic religion stemming from Roman Catholicism, and Mexican prayer alters, it’s safe to say Cota put a lot of thought into this making SKINGRAFT SS 15 a spiritual experience. I hope you enjoy this collection as much as I do.
